The XGTHERMAL Explosion-Proof Natural Gas Line Heater is an indirect natural gas electric heater for pipeline transmission and pressure-regulating stations. Electric elements heat a thermal-oil medium, which transfers energy to the gas through a separate process boundary. The system supports controlled gas preheating before pressure reduction and stable downstream delivery temperatures.

XGTHERMAL configures the heater, instruments, insulation and control cabinet around gas composition, flow range, operating pressure and the required temperature after regulation. Why temperature after pressure reduction matters.

Natural gas can cool as it passes through a pressure-reducing valve. Under suitable pressure, temperature and moisture conditions, this can create hydrate or icing risks. Preheating must therefore consider conditions after regulation, rather than only the heater outlet temperature.

Engineering design

Indirect natural gas electric heater design.

Electric heating elements supply heat to an intermediate thermal-oil medium. Heat then passes across the gas-side pressure boundary into the flowing natural gas. This indirect arrangement separates the gas from the elements, while gas temperature, thermal-oil temperature and operating level are monitored independently.

Control and protection

Stable outlet temperature with layered electrical and process protection.

Gas outlet temperature provides the normal control signal, while separate protection monitors abnormal process and electrical conditions. Low gas flow, thermal-oil level, high temperature and station emergency-stop signals can be included in the heating permissive and shutdown logic.

PLC / PID temperature control

Gas outlet-temperature feedback regulates heat input against the station temperature setpoint.

SCR stepless power regulation

Power output can be adjusted smoothly to reduce thermal shock and unnecessary cycling.

Gas-flow and oil-level interlocks

Low gas flow or insufficient thermal-oil level can inhibit heating and initiate an alarm or shutdown.

Independent shutdown and ESD

How to Size a Natural Gas Line Heater

Start with gas composition, flow and the pressure-reduction conditions. The required heater outlet temperature is determined from the minimum acceptable downstream temperature. A mass-flow heat balance provides an initial estimate; final sizing uses gas-property data and the station process calculation.

Common engineering questions.

Is a natural gas line heater the same as a circulation heater?

A line heater describes a pipeline heating application. A direct gas circulation heater exposes the element sheath to gas in a heating chamber. This product uses an intermediate thermal-oil medium instead; both can serve gas-heating duties, but the heat-transfer arrangement is different.

Do all natural gas heaters use thermal oil?

No. Natural gas heaters can use direct electric, thermal-oil, water-bath or other indirect arrangements. The product presented here uses thermal-oil indirect heating. The appropriate approach depends on process conditions, temperature limits and the project specification.

How is the gas outlet temperature selected?

The setpoint is based on gas composition, moisture, flow, upstream and downstream pressures, and the minimum temperature required after regulation. There is no single temperature setting that prevents hydrates for every gas stream.

Can it be supplied as a skid-mounted package?

The heater can be supplied with insulation, instruments, junction boxes and a control cabinet. Skid-mounted piping and valves, or separately located indoor controls, can be configured to suit the station layout and hazardous-area classification.
