Project Description

The Qianjiang-Shaoguan gas pipeline No.28 valve chamber retrofit added a natural gas download point for downstream distribution in Leiyang, Hunan. The new branch required reliable temperature compensation before gas entered the distribution station, especially under pressure-reduction conditions where Joule-Thomson cooling can create hydrate formation, ice blockage, and low-temperature stress on downstream equipment.

XGTHERMAL supplied two 100kW skid-mounted explosion-proof electric resistance heater packages in a one duty and one standby arrangement. The scope included the heater bodies, explosion-proof junction boxes, control cabinets, skid piping, valves, safety relief equipment, measurement instruments, and technical service for integrated delivery.

Challenge

Why Heating Was Required at the Download Point

When high-pressure natural gas is reduced in pressure, the gas temperature can fall quickly. Without stable heating, this temperature drop may lead to hydrate formation, icing, unstable regulator operation, and low-temperature stress on downstream equipment. For a new download point connected to an existing transmission pipeline, the heater skid becomes a core process safeguard rather than a simple auxiliary unit.

The electric heater packages in this project provide temperature compensation before downstream station operation. Stable outlet temperature helps the station keep gas distribution reliable while reducing seasonal freeze-risk during low-temperature operation.

Redundant Skid Arrangement

The project uses two 100kW heater skids in a one duty and one standby configuration. If one unit requires inspection or protected shutdown, the standby skid can support continuity of supply according to the station operating strategy.

Each skid is integrated with process valves, measurement instruments, safety relief, explosion-proof junction boxes, control equipment, and installation interfaces before delivery. This reduces scattered field installation work and gives the site team a clearer mechanical, electrical, and control boundary during commissioning.

Control and Safety Logic

The control system supports local HMI operation and remote station integration. Operators can use manual, automatic, and stop modes, while closed-loop outlet-temperature control helps match heating output to the process requirement. MODBUS-RTU communication allows remote setpoint adjustment, power feedback, alarm upload, and operating-status monitoring through SCADA.

Safety protection combines temperature, flow, pressure, and electrical-protection logic. Two-stage overtemperature protection, low-flow anti-dry-heating, surge protection, pressure relief, and protected shutdown logic help the heater meet the reliability expectations of natural gas station service.

Project Value

The completed heater skid system supports safe gas download and distribution from the Qianjiang-Shaoguan pipeline. By compensating for pressure-reduction cooling, it helps prevent freeze-related operating issues and provides a stable thermal condition for downstream pressure control and metering equipment.

This case is also a repeatable reference for natural gas transmission valve chambers, city-gate stations, pressure-reduction stations, and other pipeline nodes requiring compact, explosion-proof, SCADA-ready electric heating packages.
